Teeth Whitening
Overview

The Bleaching process brightens the teeth and provides permanent removal of stains and unnatural discolorations. Bleaching is one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures as it can greatly improve the appearance of the colour of your teeths.

Brushing and flossing are daily ways to keep your teeth shiny and healthy. But if you think your smile lacks some shine or the colour is unpleasant, bleaching may be a good option for you.

When we ask our patients what they most want to change in their smile, the most common answer is that they want to have whiter teeth. In dental aesthetics, this is what 90% of the patients want.

With the time, your teeth may turn yellow or they can lose the bright color for a variety of reasons. These could be factors like coffee, tea and cigarettes.

So what is the reason for it? there for are 2 different reasons for the color change.

1. Intrinsic: Intrinsic tooth stains are stains that occur on the inside of the tooth or tooth enamel. These arise during tooth development or as a result of dental treatment such as amalgam fillings or root canals.

2. Extrinic: These are caused by the color particles (also called chromogens) that are deposited directly on the tooth surface. This discoloration is caused by food and beverages such as red wine, coffee, tobacco or Coca Cola, but medication and mouthwash solutions can also cause discoloration.

ISMAN Dental Clinic was founded in the first place to create absolutely beautiful smiles.

Why Are We
Bleaching the Teeth?

Teeth have an innate color due to genetic factors. Just as people have skin color, tooth color also varies from person to person. It is not possible to lighten this color with tooth brushing.

Anatomical Structure of Teeth:

The tooth structure consists of 4 layers. In order from outside to inside, they are enamel-dentin-pulp and cementum tissue. These layers show different organic and inorganic structural features.

The outermost layer of enamel is a shiny, transparent and hard layer. It is the hardest tissue in the body. It contains high amount of calcium. It consists of hydroxyapatite crystals.

Tooth enamel shows protective properties on the tooth surface. Our teeth are constantly exposed to external factors such as food, acidic, sugary drinks during the day. Tooth enamel acts as a protective shield against these factors. Over time and depending on use, the tooth enamel can be damaged. Traumas, clenching, aggressive tooth brushing methods, brushing with the wrong products; may cause abrasions or the formation of cracks.

As a result, abnormal discoloration may occur on the tooth surface due to enamel tissue that has reduced protective properties.

Although the colors of the teeth differ from person to person, they can also be different from each other in the same mouth. Even if the individual color and surface properties are different, the color of the teeth in general is compatible with each other. For example, canine teeth are darker and yellowish. Since the canine teeth are larger and in the corner, they are slightly darker in color, preventing them from being conspicuous. The lower teeth are slightly darker than the upper teeth. The color gets darker from the front to the back teeth. However, apart from these normalities, some teeth may be noticeably different from the others in the mouth or staining may have occurred.

In addition to color properties, surface properties are among the factors that affect the image and brightness. The anatomical lines on its surface determine the character traits of the tooth. Deep lines can cause food and drink to cause permanent discoloration.

For all the reasons mentioned above, people who are not satisfied with their tooth color can achieve great results by applying teeth whitening treatment.

How Are Whitening
Methods Performed?

Teeth whitening is the process of lightening the existing colors of the teeth with whitening gel and lights.

Before starting the process, first of all, tartar cleaning and polishing should be done. Teeth and gums should be healthy. If there is a cavity, it would be better to treat it before the whitening process, otherwise the treatment to be done afterward may damage the whitening process.

Bleaching methods are divided into 3 groups: home teeth whitening, office teeth whitening and devital teeth whitening. If there is an intense yellowness on the teeth, home + office bleaching is applied in a combined way.

Home Type Bleaching:

For home-type tooth bleaching, the patient’s lower and upper jaw measurements are taken first. According to these measurements, a thin soft plaque is prepared that can be worn on the teeth (night guard). A certain amount of teeth whitening gel (15% carbamide peroxide) is put into this plate and the home kit is made ready. Your dentist tells you detail how to use plaque and gels. It is generally recommended to be worn at night while asleep. This process can be applied for a few weeks under the supervision of a dentist.

Office Type Bleaching

Office type teeth whitening method is applied by the dentist in the clinic. First, the gums are covered with a protective barrier. The whitening gel is applied to the tooth surface. The gel is activated for a certain period of time with a laser, LED or halogen light source. The whitening session consists of 3 sessions and 15 minutes each. After every 15 minutes, a 2-minute break is taken to rest.

Combined (Home+Clinical) Teeth Whitening:

In this method, home + office whitening is applied together. The bleaching process, which will consist of 3 sessions, takes place in the clinic. A night plate is prepared with the measurements from the lower and upper jaws on the same nape and you can support the treatment with home-type bleaching when you go to bed. We apply this method with more effective results in our clinic.

Single Teeth Whitening:

After root canal treatment, a graying or darkening of the teeth occurs. Devital (internal) whitening is applied to teeth with root canal treatment by placing a whitening gel directly inside the tooth. If necessary, the filling in the tooth is removed, the whitening gel is applied to the open space and closed with a temporary filling. The treatment continues until the desired color is reached, the gel is removed when the desired color is reached, and the treatment is completed with permanent filling.
