Teeth whitening is a procedure performed under dental supervision to help reduce surface and internal discoloration that can develop on the teeth over time. Any decay or periodontal problems are addressed first. Professional dental cleaning before whitening can be preferred for removing surface tartar and plaque. The patient is informed that existing restorations such as fillings and crowns will not change color with the whitening procedure. In-office whitening is carried out under dental supervision using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide-based gels. The gum tissue is isolated with a protective barrier and the gel is applied to the teeth. In some methods, light sources assist the process. For at-home whitening, custom trays are prepared for the patient and the application is performed at home for specified periods. The choice of method is determined by the dentist according to the degree of discoloration and the patient's condition. Short-term sensitivity may occur after whitening; this usually subsides on its own. Oral care products recommended by the dentist, desensitizing toothpastes and care instructions may be used during the process. Reducing the consumption of staining foods and beverages, limiting smoking habits and maintaining regular oral hygiene contribute to preserving the results. Results vary from patient to patient. Factors such as genetics, current tooth color, enamel structure and age may affect the outcome. The procedure may not be recommended for certain conditions, including pregnancy and specific age groups.
