Orthodontics is a field of dentistry focused on correcting misalignments, crowding and bite discrepancies of the teeth and jaws according to the dentist's treatment plan. Classic metal or ceramic fixed brackets and clear aligner systems are among the treatment options evaluated based on age, oral anatomy and the patient's expectations. The aim of treatment is to provide individualized solutions addressing both functional and esthetic aspects. The process begins with a comprehensive examination. Intraoral photographs, digital panoramic and cephalometric X-rays, intraoral scanning and, when needed, three-dimensional imaging are used to collect records. The dentist prepares an individualized plan based on tooth alignment, jaw relationship, bite condition, gum health and general oral findings. Fixed brackets, clear aligners or removable appliances may be planned, depending on what is suitable. In fixed orthodontic treatment, brackets are bonded to the teeth and planned movements are applied through archwires. In the clear aligner system, after the digital design phase, a custom series of aligners is prepared and used in specified sequences. In both methods, regular check-ups are performed at intervals set by the dentist, and adjustments are made during the course of treatment. The overall duration varies by patient and generally lies between one and three years. Oral hygiene is of great importance throughout the treatment. In fixed bracket treatments, interdental brushes, orthodontic toothbrushes and flossing aids may be used. In clear aligner treatment, it is important to remove the aligners regularly to brush the teeth and clean the aligners. After the active treatment phase, a retention phase with retainers is applied to help maintain the new position of the teeth.
