Canal Treatment

Root canal treatment (endodontic treatment) is a procedure aimed at preserving a tooth when the pulp tissue inside it becomes affected due to decay, trauma or advanced gum problems. The pulp is a structure containing nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue, and it is related to the vital functions of the tooth. When inflammation or infection in the pulp is not properly evaluated, the preservation of the tooth may become challenging. The treatment process begins with a comprehensive examination. The dentist assesses the nature of pain, gum findings, tooth structure and X-ray results. When needed, three-dimensional imaging can be used to examine the anatomy of the root canals in more detail. Based on the findings, treatment options are explained to the patient and the suitability of root canal treatment is evaluated. Root canal treatment is performed under local anesthesia. The tooth is isolated with a rubber dam. After the pulp chamber is accessed, the root canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected with appropriate instruments. The prepared canals are then filled with appropriate filling materials. After treatment, the coronal structure of the tooth is assessed; in teeth with significant loss of substance, a protective crown or other restorative options may be planned. Treatment may be completed in a single visit or in multiple visits, depending on the tooth's condition as determined by the dentist. After root canal treatment, the function of the tooth is generally preserved. Proper oral care after treatment, protection of the coronal structure, restorations that can withstand chewing forces and periodic dental check-ups are important parts of follow-up. The dentist evaluates the condition of the tooth after treatment and may plan additional treatment options when needed. Root canal treatment is individualized for each patient. The anatomy of the tooth, the number of root canals, the level of infection and the patient's general health may affect the treatment plan.
